LAMATA At 20 : Lagos To Deploy 1000 Electric Buses By 2025, Red Line To Begin Service In Q2 2024

LAMATA at 20 : Lagos State Government to deploy 1000 EVs by 2025, add CNG-powered vehicles to fleet, says LAMATA MD. 

Says 10 CNG buses are already being used on selected BRT corridors to test their adaptability to public transport.

Also revealed that test run of Red Line will commence by 1st Quarter of 2024, while commercial services will begin by 2nd Quarter.

Earlier today November 30th, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) held a Press conference, which was streamed live on its official Facebook page, as part of the agency’s 20th anniversary celebration.

During the event, LAMATA boss, Mrs Abimbola Akinajo, said about 1000 Electric Buses will be deployed in the next 24 months to further demonstrate the commitment of the Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration to the Transportation and Traffic Management pillar of the THEMES+ agenda.

To explore alternative fuel for urban mobility, she also disclosed that the state is piloting the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), adding that 10 CNG buses are already being used on selected BRT corridors to test their adaptability to public transport.

“As we begin another 20 years, our vision is to see a Lagos where all transport modes are integrated, and people do not need to put their vehicles on the road to get to where they want to go, a Lagos where emission will be reduced,” she said.

Speaking on the Lagos Urban Train Projects (LUTP), Mrs Akinajo said LAMATA has delivered on the Blue Line rail, adding that test run of the Red Line will commence by 1st Quarter of 2024, while commercial services will begin by 2nd Quarter 2024.

Since the creation of LAMATA, Mrs Akinajo said the agency has built and operationalized the 13km Oshodi-Abule-Egba and 34km Ikorodu-CMS BRT Corridor, as well as implemented two of the planned six rail lines, with the support of parent Transportation Ministry.
