Mclaren’s EVs May Use Tech From Chinese Brand Nio

The merger of McLaren and Forseven paves the way for the possible adoption of Chinese brand Nio’s electric powertrain in British supercars. McLaren’s future electric supercars could adopt Chinese technologies thanks to the merger of the British company and Forseven, a British electric vehicle startup.

The partnership between the two companies brings China closer to Europe. The link between the two brands is CYVN Holdings, an Abu Dhabi-based investment fund that also owns McLaren and a stake of over 20 percent in the Chinese brand Nio.

After five years of financial difficulties, McLaren has sought new resources to address the electric transition. The merger with Forseven, backed by CYVN, will give it access to advanced technologies thanks to a recent licensing agreement between Forseven and the Nio brand.

Although McLaren CEO Michael Leiters has always expressed caution about the possibility of the brand’s supercars being fully electric, this partnership paves the way for possible evolutions, including high-performance hybrids and possibly pure electric cars, precisely by using the knowledge that Nio has gained over time.

This strategy is part of a broader plan by Middle Eastern investors, increasingly influential in the global automotive sector. With the support of CYVN, the merger of McLaren and Forseven could represent a turning point for the Woking-based brand, combining British know-how with Chinese electric mobility technologies in a unique blend.

Another key aspect of the merger is the expansion of the range. Like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Porsche have already done, McLaren could also introduce a luxury SUV and a sports sedan, expanding the range of models for its audience without sacrificing the essence of the brand.
