Ford’s New EV Platform Promises A “Model T” Moment

Ford is set to unveil a significant new EV foundation next week, which CEO Jim Farley describes as monumental for the brand.

Ford announced that it will share “more about its plans to build and design groundbreaking electric vehicles in America” on Monday, August 11th. That sounds a bit vague, but according to the Detroit Free Press, among others, Jim Farley clarified the plans during the quarterly earnings presentation. “This is a Model T moment for us at Ford. An opportunity to bring a new family of vehicles into the world that offers incredible technology, efficiency, space, and features.” Farley also explained that this includes a new EV foundation.

This new EV foundation may be the platform Ford first hinted at early last year. This platform should allow it to develop not only more modern but also more affordable EVs. With this, Ford aims to compete with the Chinese, among others. It’s not entirely certain whether Europe will also benefit, but the fact that Farley refers to “the world” is promising. Who knows, this foundation might pave the way for a return of the Ford Fiesta as an EV, but let’s wait and see how concrete everything is on Monday.
