Kia Europe Worried About Extended Fuel Car Sales
There are calls from some within the European automotive industry to extend the sales of new gasoline-powered cars. There’s also a different perspective, such as from Kia.
The impending ban on the sale of new passenger cars powered by fossil fuels is looming. It’s still ten years away, but in the automotive industry, that’s relatively soon. Some car manufacturers seem to be growing more anxious about the potential consequences and are advocating for a later deadline. Mercedes-Benz, for example, says it fears the European car market could collapse otherwise. These are not half-hearted statements. Kia, however, is completely unconcerned and fears the consequences of a later deadline.
Kia Europe CEO Marc Hedrich issued a similarly stern warning. “We’re coming with an avalanche of electric cars. If we suddenly have to stop launching electric cars, it will cost us a fortune,” Automotive News reports. “We plan to be fully compliant by 2035.” It should come as no surprise, then, that Kia is advocating simply sticking to that deadline. Incidentally, Hedrich also took a jab at Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius for his stance: “That’s the same guy who promised a few years ago that his company would only sell EVs by 2030.”
