Ford Set To Give The Mach-E Real Door Handles
Ford has quietly introduced a long-awaited change to the Mustang Mach-E for the 2026 model year. All models now come with real rear door handles, the popular California Special package returns, and prices have been slightly adjusted downwards.
For owners who have struggled for years with pressing a small electric button and awkwardly pulling the door edge, this is a significant improvement in quality of life. Many will agree that this change is even more important than the return of a special equipment package.
Ford has long faced criticism for its rear-door design. Until now, entering the rear seats required pressing a small electric opener on the C-pillar. Once the doors were ajar, another mechanism would prevent them from fully closing until someone pulled them back to enter the vehicle. It was an unnecessarily complicated system that has now been simplified.
A Ford representative confirmed the change to InsideEVs: “All 2026 Mustang Mach-E models will get a rear door handle as standard equipment. This was a change as part of our ongoing approach, made in response to feedback from our customers who wanted a physical handle both front and rear. The rear doors still use the same electronic unlocking mechanism with a button on the door, but now the doors can be pulled open using a handle.”
So, most of the mechanism remains the same, but users no longer have to push their hand into the door frame to open it. Ford has been asked for more information on whether this design change is related to criticisms of the rear doors’ safety, as well as whether they plan to make it easier to enter in the event the 12-volt battery is discharged.
