VW’s Revealed Restructuring Plan: Four Plants And Tens Of Thousands of Jobs In Germany
Leaked documents reveal Volkswagen plans to close four German manufacturing plants between 2031 and 2034 as part of a radical restructuring effort.
Although specific details remain behind a paywall, Reuters has reported that Volkswagen intends to close four of its German manufacturing plants between 2031 and 2034 as part of a comprehensive restructuring strategy.
Volkswagen plans to close the Emden and Zwickau plants first. Emden (opened 1964) employs 7,700 workers producing the ID.4, ID.7, and ID.7 Tourer. Zwickau employs 8,000, manufacturing the Audi Q4 e-tron series, Cupra Born, VW ID.3, ID.4, and ID.5, plus bodies for the Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus.
Following the 2031 closures of Emden and Zwickau, the Hanover plant is slated to close in 2032, followed by the Audi Neckarsulm facility in 2034. The latter employs 15,500 staff producing the A5, A6, A8, and e-tron GT.
Volkswagen previously signaled potential trouble for these plants in an internal memo earlier this year, warning that competitive use cases could not be confirmed for the 2030s. Despite protests at the Neckarsulm facility, leadership is moving forward with the restructuring to address rising pressure from Chinese competitors in Europe, setting the stage for a major conflict with labor unions.
