Land Rover Defender Wolf II Unveiled As Possible Replacement For British Army’s Iconic ‘Landy’

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has unveiled the new Defender Wolf Series II, a military-focused 4×4 developed as a possible replacement for the British Army’s ageing fleet of iconic Land Rover vehicles scheduled to be phased out by 2030.

The unveiling comes as the British Army prepares to retire its legendary Land Rover fleet after more than 70 years of service. The Defender Wolf Series II is set to compete alongside other competitors for the Ministry of Defence Light Mobility Vehicle tender.

The Defender Wolf II will make its public appearance at the British Army’s DVD 2026 event at Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire on September 16–17. If selected by the Ministry of Defence, it could become the latest successor to the famous military Land Rover popularly known as the “Landy.”

Based on Defender’s D7x architecture, the Defender Wolf II uses a monocoque construction rather than the traditional ladder-frame design. It has been engineered to provide the strength, durability and mobility required for demanding military operations.

Boasting chassis and body architecture engineered to withstand some of the harshest environments and operating conditions faced by military vehicles, JLR says the Wolf II has undergone more than 62,000 tests during its engineering development.

“Our Defender Wolf Series II has been tested to the extreme and is highly suited to military light mobility purposes. Defender already demonstrates its versatility in tough roles for emergency organisations around the world such as border force, mountain rescue, police and fire,” said Patrick McGillycuddy, Defender Managing Director.

Alongside the Defender Wolf II, JLR also established a new Defender Defence Division to engage with and support the requirements of other defence organisations. The Wolf II will be offered in four configurations, including tactical mobility, general mobility, ambulance and utility versions, providing flexibility for different military missions.
