A Historic Border Crossing Was Just Made Possible By A Ford Mustang V8
Despite the popular perception that the Ford Mustang is entirely American-made, its production is a global, collaborative effort involving significant international support.
The Ford Mustang’s iconic status is rivaled only by the reverence for its 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine. Under a recent collaborative agreement, Canada has been granted the rights to assist in the production of these V8 engines, including those utilized in the Mustang lineup.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer crossed the new Gordie Howe International Bridge in a Mustang, highlighting the US-Canada partnership. While the car was assembled in Michigan, its V8 engine was built in Windsor, Ontario, emphasizing the cross-border collaboration in Ford’s production. High-performance 5.2-liter engines remain exclusively produced in Dearborn, Michigan.
The historical connection between the Ford Mustang and Canada dates back to the very inception of the iconic muscle car. In 1964, just three days before the vehicle’s official global debut, a pilot from Newfoundland named Stanley Tucker visited a dealership in St. John’s and successfully purchased one of the first units. This early acquisition was made possible by the logistics of the era, which prioritized the delivery of new vehicles to the most remote dealerships first. Ford eventually repurchased the vehicle from Mr. Tucker, officially recognizing it as the first Mustang ever sold.
