“The new BMW 7 Series combines Level 2 autonomous driving with Level 3 autonomous driving for the first time.” BMW has officially disclosed this in Germany. That seems strange at first, but upon second glance, it’s just not that special.

Level 3 autonomy (or level 3) is the first autonomous driving level where drivers can and may shift their attention to other matters. This technology is still in its infancy, although it is available in certain markets under strict conditions and from a limited number of brands, such as Mercedes and BMW. Home country Germany is, of course, the first place for these brands to roll out new technologies, and BMW has now decided to combine Level 2 and Level 3 autonomy in the 7 Series. This can be ordered with both Highway Assistant (Level 2) and BMW Personal Pilot L3 (Level 3). Highway Assistant is now even standard for those who select the latter €6,000 system. Anyone who has done this before will also receive free highway assistance for existing cars.

But what is really the news, we hear you ask? After all, a system that can drive Level 3 autonomously can also automatically handle Level 2, right? That’s true, but the joke is that all Level 3 driving in Germany is only allowed up to 60 km/h. Above that, it is of no use to you, and that is where Highway Assistant comes into play. That is a usual, albeit good, combination of adaptive cruise control and active lane assistant, including assistance with lane changes. You can even take your hands off the wheel for a while, but above 60, the BMW keeps a close eye on whether you are still paying attention.

The fact that the combination of Highway Assistant and L3 was not previously standard is actually bigger news than the fact that it is now the case. But then you know that again.
