BYD Is On Its Way To Becoming The Largest EV Manufacturer
The meteoric global expansion of the Chinese brand, combined with a difficult political context and tightening regulations for Tesla in the US and other markets, will allow BYD to claim the title of world leader in sales of all-electric vehicles for the first time in 2025.
Although both companies will release annual sales figures soon, based on the latest reports, BYD has taken the lead and set a significant lead that makes it seem virtually impossible for Tesla to close the gap.
By the end of November, the Shenzhen-based company—which also makes plug-in hybrid vehicles—had sold more than two million fully electric vehicles, becoming the first company to surpass that figure. Tesla, on the other hand, sold slightly more than 1.2 million electric vehicles by the end of September.
The American manufacturer benefited in the third quarter from a surge related to the expiration of tax credits in the US, which prompted many buyers to rush to make purchases. Global shipments were up 7 percent year-over-year.
Although experts expect an increase in sales for Tesla in the fourth quarter, analysts are forecasting about 1.65 million for the full year of 2025. That would be a drop of about 8 percent compared to last year’s result. Sales were below expectations in North America (-33%), Europe (-34%), and, to a lesser extent, China (-10%). This is also a significantly lower annual forecast than BYD’s sales as of the end of November.
Tesla’s sales have been hit by an unexpected slowdown in the transition to electric vehicles, increased competition and the relationship between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Donald Trump during the presidential campaign. It tarnished the brand’s image and sparked protests and calls for a boycott. Sales have fallen sharply and continue to fall, especially in Europe.
Meanwhile, their main Chinese rival is maintaining its meteoric rise. BYD is actively seeking to expand into international markets and is announcing the construction of factories. In everything, success follows them for now, which will help them consolidate the title of the largest manufacturer of electric cars in the world, probably by the end of the decade.
