China’s Li Auto defends its i8 SUV After lifting heavy-duty Cheng long truck off the ground during head-on crash test.

Following the test, the i8 reportedly sustained no deformation to critical structures, including the A-, B-, and C-pillars.

In addition, all nine airbags were also deployed properly and that no leakage were observed in the i8’s battery-pack.

As expected, Chenglong’s parent company, Dongfeng, issued a statement, expressing concern over the video’s portrayal of its brand.

Chinese electric car brand, Li Auto, has defended a promotional video showing its all-new i8 SUV lifting a heavy-duty 8-ton Chenglong truck off the ground during a head-on crash test.

In the video shown at the unveiling of the all-new i8, the 2.6-ton electric SUV was seen colliding head-on with the 8-ton Chenglong truck, whose all wheels momentarily lifted off the ground and cabin tilting forward at the time of impact.

Following the test, the i8 reportedly sustained no deformation to critical structures, including the A-, B-, and C-pillars, according to Car News China. In addition, all nine airbags were also deployed properly and that no leakage were observed in the battery-pack.

As expected, Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor (Dongfeng Group), the parent company of the Chenglong truck brand, issued a public statement on August 1st, expressing concern over the video’s portrayal of its brand.

On August 3rd, Li Auto responded in a statement through an official Weibo page, stating that the crash test was conducted by China Automotive Engineering Research Institute (CAERI), a third-party state-owned company.

Li Auto noted that the test was intended to evaluate the i8 Electric SUV’s passive safety performance, adding that Li Auto and Chenglong operate in separate vehicle markets, with no direct competition.

“As a benchmark brand in China’s trucking industry, Dongfeng Chenglong’s quality and safety have always been trusted by truck drivers. To this end, we would like to clarify that there is no direct competition between Li Auto and Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor,” Li Auto added.
