Due To A Lack Of Parts, Fiat 500 Production In Turin Was Suspended

Car company Stellantis said it was extending the summer production shutdown at its Mirafiori plant in Turin, where the Fiat 500 model is made, for an additional week due to parts supply problems.

Production will be halted from July 27 to 31, an additional break on top of a planned three-week summer shutdown in August, Reuters reported. Stellantis told unions the reason was shortages of certain components, including engines, bumpers and sensors. The company said some suppliers were struggling to meet increased production of the hybrid version of the Fiat 500, which was reintroduced late last year.

However, the union believes that the extended work stoppage also indicates weaker demand for the model than expected. Stellantis previously announced plans to produce around 100,000 Fiat 500s, in hybrid and fully electric versions, by 2026. According to the company, around 15,000 vehicles were produced in the first quarter, while the daily production capacity of the Mirafiori plant has been reduced from 430 to 400 cars this year.

The factory, according to the previous plan, should resume production after the current one-week break due to a local holiday in Turin, before the start of the extended summer shutdown.
