Jaguar Land Rover Fires Design Boss Behind Jaguar’s Controversial Rebrand - Report - autojosh

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) fires Gerry McGovern, the design boss behind Jaguar’s controversial rebrand, report says.

His exit comes two weeks after Indian-born PB Balaji assumed the CEO role of JLR on November 17, 2025.

He is credited with helping push the Land Rover and Range Rover brands upmarket with a series of fast-selling models.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has fired Gerry McGovern, the prolific car designer behind the Jaguar rebrand, which includes the creation of the highly controversial Type 00 Concept, sources inside the firm have told Autocar and Autocar India.

Autocar India understood that the brand’s Chief Creative Officer was asked to leave the firm on Monday December 1st, with its source suggesting McGovern was “escorted out of the office”.

The outlet points out that McGovern’s exit “comes swiftly after PB Balaji assumed the CEO role [of JLR] on November 17, 2025”, following the exit of Mr Adrian Mardell, who retired from JLR after 3 years as CEO and 35 years with the Company.

While his latest work might have cost him his job, the Coventry-born designer is credited with helping push the Land Rover and Range Rover brands upmarket with a series of fast-selling models during his 21-year career at Land Rover and Jaguar.

Explaining why he rejoined Land Rover as Director, Advanced Design in April 2004, McGovern said : “Land Rover fascinates me more than any other car maker because it has its roots in pure design as opposed to styling.”

Before joining the Tata-owned British luxury marque, McGovern worked on the MG EXE concept car, the MGF roadster and the first Land Rover Freelander while at British Leyland.
