Petrol Powered Porsche Macan Will Be Phased Out By Middle of Next Year
Porsche discontinued the petrol Macan in most European countries last year due to its failure to meet new cybersecurity requirements set by the General Security Regulation (GSR2), effective July 2024. While the model is still sold in other markets, its availability there is also coming to an end.
The production of the original Macan will end in less than a year. CFO Jochen Breckner revealed that the last units will roll off the assembly line around mid-2026. However, he did not rule out the possibility that remaining stocks could keep the model alive in non-EU markets until 2027.
The importance of the first-generation Macan cannot be overstated. In 2023, the last year of full availability, it was Porsche’s second-best-selling model, with 87,355 units, trailing the Cayenne by just 198 units. Although its profit margins couldn’t compare to those of the 911, selling tens of thousands of crossovers a year was a vital source of income.
Porsche typically has a successor ready when a model is discontinued, but that’s not the case for the Macan. Initially, the company did not plan to replace the gasoline version, thinking customers would switch to the new electric model. However, they have since identified a demand for a more affordable internal combustion crossover below the Cayenne. Since no successor was planned, it won’t be available by mid-2026 when production of the current Macan ends.
Outgoing boss Oliver Blume has confirmed that a replacement is in the works and should arrive by 2028 with petrol and hybrid powertrains.
What can we expect? Porsche says the model will “take advantage of synergies” within the Volkswagen Group, hinting at mechanical links with the new Audi Q5, which uses Premium Platform Combustion (PPC).
Still, with the original Macan due to say goodbye in 2026 and its replacement not expected until 2028, Porsche will face a two-year hiatus in one of its most important segments. It’s a rare misstep from Zuffenhausen, but using the Q5 platform should help speed things up.
When it finally arrives, that new crossover won’t be called Macan, but only an electric car will bear that name. According to Blume, it will be “a very, very typical Porsche for this segment, and also different from the electric Macan.”
