The First Porsche SUV With Front-Wheel Drive Will Be Released Soon
Porsche’s new SUV, currently referred to as the M1, will be the Macan’s successor, featuring internal combustion engines. To clarify, the new Macan is electric, while the new M1 will be offered with internal combustion engines.
Instead of rear-wheel drive, power will basically be transmitted to the front axle. The rear wheels will only be engaged if there is a risk of losing grip. A clear change for Porsche, which has long been known for its rear-wheel drive cars. The M1 is based on the same platform as the third-generation Audi Q5 and uses the Q5’s Quattro Ultra powertrain.
The SUV is part of Porsche’s new model policy aimed at reversing declining sales. At the same time, Porsche wants to develop quickly with the help of Audi’s platform. The M1 is expected to be offered with gasoline engines: a 2.0-litre turbo engine with 268 hp and a powerful 3.0-litre V6 engine with 362 hp. Neither plug-in hybrid nor diesel variants are planned. Front-wheel drive means Porsche is breaking with 94 years of tradition.
