A prototype of BMW’s upcoming iX3 Long Wheelbase, an all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle, proved the efficiency of its Neue Klasse platform by successfully completing an 800-km (497-mile) alpine loop challenge in China on a single charge.

The BMW iX3 50L xDrive prototype departed from Xining—located 2,200 meters above sea level—and climbed to nearly 4,000 meters before returning to its starting point, completing a drive of more than 800 kilometers on public roads.

With an average consumption of 12.6 kWh per 100 kilometers, BMW says the result indicates a total range potential of 835 to 840 kilometers under the conditions of the challenge.

To reflect realistic customer driving behaviour, the entire route was completed in Efficient mode. During the journey, the prototype—which was equipped with 21-inch aerodynamic wheels—encountered heavy snowfall, intense rain and strong high-altitude sunshine.

“Combined with varying road surfaces, public-road traffic conditions and the demands of plateau driving, these conditions created a highly representative test environment for electric mobility in everyday use,” BMW said in a statement.

“The achievement highlights the outstanding efficiency of the BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase under challenging real-world conditions and demonstrates BMW’s approach to electric mobility: delivering confidence in every kilometer.
Real-world validation under demanding conditions”.

Scheduled for release in the second half of 2026, the upcoming China-exclusive BMW iX3 50L (Long Wheelbase) is being developed and produced by the BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture in Shenyang.
