Oyo Police Commences Operation Velvet, Targets Unregistered Vehicles, Obscured Number Plates
Oyo State Police Command launches operation Velvet, to crack down on unregistered vehicles, obscured number plates.
Warned that vehicles found violating laws may be impounded, their owners may be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Oyo State Police Command has announced the commencement of Operation Velvet, a strategic enforcement exercise aimed at strengthening security and ensuring compliance with road traffic regulations across the state.
Scheduled to commence on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, the operation will target vehicles whose number plates have been deliberately defaced, covered or otherwise obscured, as well as motorists who fail to comply with established traffic rules and regulations.
In a statement by DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), the Police warned that vehicles found violating relevant laws may be impounded, while their owners or other responsible persons may be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, however, emphasised that the exercise is strictly for the enforcement of the law and must not be used as an avenue for harassment or extortion of members of the public.
Noting that officers deployed for the operation have been directed to act professionally and courteously, the Command warned that “any police officer found attempting to extort, intimidate or unlawfully exploit members of the public under the guise of the exercise will face appropriate disciplinary action.”
The Oyo State Police Command urged motorists and other road users in the state to cooperate with the exercise and comply with all applicable laws to promote safer and more orderly roads across Oyo State.
