Germany Wants More Protection For The European Automotive Sector Against China
The German government wants the European Commission to take more action to protect the European automotive sector against competition from China. Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said this during a visit to Volkswagen’s headquarters in Wolfsburg. The states of Lower Saxony, Bavaria, and Baden-Württemberg, where many car factories are located, also want more action.
According to Klingbeil, more must be done against China’s unfair trade practices, and the EU should not be naive when doing business with the Chinese. “We must send a clear signal at the European level.” He believes, for example, that high import tariffs should also be imposed on Chinese plug-in hybrid cars and that rules should be established regarding local sourcing. Currently, there are already high tariffs on fully electric cars from China because, according to Brussels, manufacturers receive state aid.
The federal states say that the European automotive industry is facing “historical disruptions” due to competition from China, but also due to, for example, high energy costs and bureaucratic regulatory pressure.
