Fake Engine Sounds Of Electric Cars Are Banned?!

Germany is preparing a law that will ban fake engine sounds of electric cars.

In recent years, major car brands such as Porsche and BMW have invested heavily in recreating the traditional sound of classic petrol engines. Porsche has developed artificial shift functions, as has Hyundai, while BMW has patented advanced systems that allow electric cars to hum deep without using traditional speakers. However, the technological development has caused great dissatisfaction in the federal state of Hamburg, where the local authorities have had enough of unnecessary noise.

According to the German automotive magazine Auto Motor und Sport, an official legislative proposal is being prepared that would make external artificial engine noise illegal. The background to this drastic measure is a new traffic phenomenon that car enthusiasts and critics call EV posing. Drivers use powerful external speakers to reproduce engine sounds. Purpose? Drawing attention to the presence of electric cars, but the German authorities do not like it. Politicians emphasize that the ban only applies to the space outside the car, so the driver can still enjoy the synthetic sound of the engine inside the cabin.

The proposal does not encroach on the legally mandated AVAS system, which emits a low-pitched warning sound at low speeds to protect vulnerable road users. On the other hand, any other unnecessary noise generation from the outside should be prohibited by law, according to the attitude of the Hamburg authorities. If the proposal is passed in the Bundestag in Berlin, the ban will not be limited to the German road network. Since the car’s equipment is subject to common EU rules on vehicle homologation, the German ban will require a change in European regulations.
