BYD Wants Its Yangwang U9 Hypercar To Go Even Faster!
Despite initial skepticism, BYD has defied expectations to become a global EV leader, expanding its influence through a portfolio of innovative niche brands.
BYD’s Yangwang U9 Extreme, the pinnacle of the brand’s technology, currently holds a world-record top speed of 308 mph with its 3,000-hp powertrain. Despite this, BYD continues to push limits, aiming to surpass the 310 mph mark in an upcoming test run.
According to reports from CarNewsChina, BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li has announced that the company intends to conduct a high-speed test run with the Yangwang U9 Extreme this November. The brand aims to surpass the 500 km/h (310 mph) threshold in Dubai. Li indicated that the team is currently collaborating with local authorities to secure a suitable 15-kilometer stretch of road for the attempt; however, specific details regarding the exact venue and date remain unconfirmed.
This announcement represents a shift from previous reports, which suggested that the high-speed trial would take place at Germany’s Automotive Testing Papenburg (ATP). It remains unclear whether the company intends to pursue multiple testing locations or if the Dubai venue has officially replaced the German facility as the primary site for this record-breaking endeavor.
The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ remains the primary benchmark for the Yangwang U9 Extreme, having achieved a verified speed of 304 mph with its internal combustion, non-electrified powertrain. Furthermore, in 2017, the Koenigsegg Agera RS established a significant record at 277 mph.
It will be compelling to observe how the U9 Extreme attempts to surpass the 310 mph threshold. Given the complex challenges posed by physics at such velocities, achieving this milestone will require an extraordinary engineering effort to ensure both performance and safety.
