Report: Porsche Is Abandoning The Electrified 718 Cayman And Boxster Sports
Porsche could reportedly scrap its electric 718 Cayman and Boxster projects.
The German automaker has a new CEO who took office on January 1, 2026, and is reportedly considering halting development of the two sports cars.
According to Bloomberg, “people familiar with the matter” said the electric 718’s rising costs and mounting development delays are hampering the project. Porsche ended production of the previous-generation 718 in October, with plans to introduce electric vehicles later this year.
Rumours of potential development issues surfaced as early as December 2024, when a report quoted an engineer saying the automaker was “significantly behind schedule” on the vehicle. Another report surfaced last May claiming that Porsche had to pause development due to Northvolt’s bankruptcy.
Then, in September, the automaker confirmed that the next-generation 718 will continue to offer internal combustion engines. These models would be at the top of the model range, supposedly above electric versions that may not appear now.
