BMW Is Recalling Over 180,000 Cars

BMW is recalling 189,130 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series vehicles manufactured between July 29, 2014, and November 12, 2020, at authorized workshops worldwide. The reason for the recall is the risk of water entering the starter relay.

The identified technical fault involves a starter relay that may lack adequate protection against moisture ingress, creating a significant safety concern. Over time, the accumulation of moisture can lead to internal corrosion, which risks causing an electrical short circuit. This malfunction poses a fire hazard to the vehicle and requires immediate attention. To proactively address and rectify this defect, BMW is initiating a mandatory recall for affected units. Owners are advised to visit an authorized service center, where the starter motor will be professionally replaced to ensure the long-term safety and integrity of the vehicle’s electrical system.

This critical recall campaign, which focuses on addressing the potential for electrical system failure and fire hazards, is being strictly overseen and monitored by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, known as the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), under the official reference number 16791R to ensure full compliance and vehicle safety.
