Subaru Impreza WRX Performance Sedan Makes A 2022 Return
Many may or may not know the Subaru Impreza but the car has been known for its AWD and performance prowess over the years. It used to compete with the now-discontinued Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and it was a worthy adversary. The model has just been renewed for 2022 and still comes with all the flavours you can get from a small performance sedan.
Power comes from a 2.4-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder boxer engine that churns out 271 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The new engine pairs with either a six-speed manual or the Subaru Performance Transmission – a CVT – that pumps power through Subaru’s AWD system. The CVT features an eight-speed manual mode accessible through the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. An external transmission fluid cooler is also available.
Styling has been tweaked more than flipped. The last-generation car is clearly recognizable in the new car’s styling but the 2022 WRX is more expressive and dramatic with its bodywork. The fenders bulge more prominently and the rear diffuser has more creases and creeps further up the rear fascia. Upfront, the signature hexagonal grille nestles between standard LED headlights and below a prominent hood scoop.
On the interior, Subaru fitted its next-generation rally-bred icon with numerous updates. On the infotainment front, the Japanese brand equips the 2022 WRX with a portrait-oriented 11.6-inch centre information display called Subaru Starlink. The latter supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Customers can even order an 11-speaker Harman Kardon sound system with a 504-watt amplifier, and the entire setup was factory-configured for this model.
