To Do What Cadillac’s EV Can’t, Genesis Might Equip The GV90 With A Gas Engine

Genesis has unveiled its 657-hp GV90 electric flagship, which currently launches exclusively as a BEV. However, executives confirmed that an extended-range electric (EREV) variant remains a possibility, as the platform is fully compatible should customer demand warrant it.

The automaker justifies the new GV90’s pure-electric powertrain, citing superior torque and cabin silence, which perfectly suit a luxury flagship. With its 123.5 kWh battery and 310-mile range, the BEV platform offers impressive performance. However, executives confirmed an extended-range electric (EREV) variant remains possible, potentially addressing range anxiety and charging infrastructure concerns if customer demand warrants it.

Sean Lee confirmed the GV90 could adopt an EREV powertrain if customer demand requires it. While the GV90 is currently BEV-only, Lee noted that future Genesis models will offer hybrid, EREV, and electric options. Though not a formal commitment, leadership has confirmed the SUV’s technical compatibility with EREV, while Donckerwolke continues to emphasize that an all-electric future is inevitable.

While he acknowledged that internal combustion engines may persist in exotic performance vehicles, he maintained that common skepticism surrounding electric vehicles often stems from a lack of firsthand experience. His assessment may be accurate; however, long-term industry trends are secondary to the immediate preferences of luxury SUV buyers when the GV90 debuts next year. Genesis is banking on the market’s readiness for a purely electric flagship, yet the company has strategically ensured that an EREV alternative remains a viable contingency should consumer demand dictate a shift in direction.
