Toyota Teases Next-Generation Supra

The current Toyota Supra is approaching the end of its production run, and the Final Edition signifies the conclusion of the six-year Mk5 cycle. However, the Supra name will return to Toyota’s lineup soon.
In a recent interview with MotorTrend, Toyota hinted that a new Supra is indeed coming. What’s more, this new one shouldn’t take as long to hit the market as the Mk5.
“It would make sense for us to get a new Supra. But when and how have not been determined yet,” said Toyota Motor North America senior vice president of product planning and strategy, Cooper Eriksen. “There’s going to be some gap. The question is how big that gap is going to be. . . . Our goal is to have a gap that’s significantly smaller [than before].”
As Motor1 reminds us, US production of the Mk4 Supra ceased in 1998, meaning it took Toyota 21 years to revive the Supra name in the US. Fortunately, Toyota promises we won’t have to wait another two decades for the next one.
Unfortunately, we won’t see a new Supra next year or the following year, as Toyota is focused on core products like the RAV4 and Camry. It’s also unclear whether the next Supra will be a co-developed project like the current one, which Toyota produced alongside BMW’s Z4.
“A product like the Supra has gotten to the point where we now have the Final Edition, and the reason is that it’s just not cost-effective with all the new regulations and investments we have to make,” Erickson noted.
