Upon its completion, the Lagos Blue Line is expected to have their capacity to move more than 400,000 passengers daily.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has affirmed the commitment of Lagos State Government’s vision of delivering the much-anticipated second phase of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line by 2026.

Managing Director of LAMATA, Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo made this known on Wednesday when she led an extensive inspection tour of the ongoing transportation infrastructure projects.

The tour commenced with a thorough review of the Marina and Mile 2 interchanges. These vital hubs are being developed with funding jointly provided by the LASG and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).

The inspection also covered the progress of the construction of a new Mazamaza bridge. The second phase of the Blue Line is a significant step in the expansion of Lagos’ modern rail network.

During the inspection, Engr. Akinajo, who expressed satisfaction with the progress of work, also provided a confident outlook on the project’s timeline.

“The Blue Line infrastructure is slated for completion by 2026, with operations for the entire line to begin in the first quarter of 2027,” she stated. She further emphasized the transformative impact of these projects on Lagos’ transportation landscape.

“The goal of these interchanges is to create a seamless intermodal transport system, allowing for easy transitions between bus, rail, and water,” Engr. Akinajo explained.

She also highlighted the inclusive design, adding that “provisions for non-motorized transport, including cycle paths and walkways, are also included at both Marina and Mile 2.”

In a plea to the citizens of Lagos, Engr. Akinajo called for collective responsibility in protecting the new assets.

“I urge Lagosians to safeguard the infrastructure and use it responsibly,” she appealed, underscoring the long-term benefits these investments will bring to the metropolitan area.

Accompanying Mrs. Akinajo on the tour was a delegation of key stakeholders and technical experts, including Engr. Olasunkanmi Okusaga (Technical Adviser Public Transport Rail) and Mr. Alexandre Lorot from AFD.

Upon its completion, the Lagos Blue Line is poised to significantly transform intra-city transportation, with an expected capacity to move more than 400,000 passengers daily, drastically impacting the commuting experience for Lagosians.
