Hyundai Has Announced The Production Of A “Proper” Pickup Truck

Following the 2021 Santa Cruz model, Hyundai has announced the production of a “real, truly capable” pickup truck; however, this new vehicle will likely not be available in North America.
Hyundai Australia CEO Don Romano has confirmed to Drive that the company is working on a new mid-size pickup. It is Hyundai’s rival with similar models, such as the Toyota Hilux, the Ford Ranger, and its cousin, the new Kia Tasman.
“I’m not sure about the exact time. The timing of our vehicle’s appearance will depend on the type of vehicle we develop. If we use a platform like Tasman’s, it could happen soon,” Romano said.
There are still no details; according to Romanov’s admission, it is not clear what would drive the pick-up in the first place. He mentions diesel, hybrid, and even all-electric options as possibilities. But Hyundai could turn to General Motors for help; they recently signed an agreement on the joint production of pickup trucks and vans.
“We would look at what’s available from General Motors,” Romano told Drive. “My goal is to continue to look ahead, and we have a strategic alliance with General Motors, but not just on pickup vehicles. We want to have a range of options, and General Motors is part of that.”
Hyundai hopes to have its new pickup in production within the next three years.
