Project aimed at revolutionizing the city’s transportation and power sectors as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Lagos State Government through the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has taken a significant step towards a greener future by inaugurating a steering committee to oversee the implementation of alternative fuel for transportation and power generation.

The roadmap outlined by consultants envisions a fully operational biogas plant in Lagos by 2029, aimed at revolutionizing the city’s transportation and power sectors as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Speaking at the inauguration on Thursday, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Seun Osiyemi expressed optimism about the potential of alternative fuels, particularly biogas, to reduce transportation costs in the state.

Also in attendance is Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, MD of LAWMA, who highlighted the immense potential of the state’s daily waste output, particularly the 6,500 tons of organic waste, which could be used to fuel sustainable energy production.

“It only makes sense to utilize this abundant organic waste to produce biogas,” Gbadegesin emphasized, adding that “this will not only improve waste management but also provide a clean and renewable energy source.”

By harnessing the power of organic waste, Lagos State aims to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, lower transportation costs, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
