After A Defective Range Rover Burned Down A Family Home, Land Rover Was Hit With A $7 Million Lawsuit

A Georgia family is suing Land Rover after their 2017 Range Rover allegedly spontaneously combusted while parked, causing a massive fire that destroyed their home and personal property.

This is not an isolated issue; Land Rover faces a new multimillion-dollar lawsuit over spontaneous combustion risks, shifting focus to a previously unidentified cabin electrical fault.

According to the lawsuit, the catastrophic blaze occurred shortly before Christmas. The Mitchell family had parked their vehicle in an attached carport several days prior, yet a malfunctioning subcomponent within the Infotainment Master Controller allegedly triggered a severe thermal ignition. Because this module maintains a continuous draw of quiescent current to support media and navigation standby features, it poses a significant fire hazard, effectively functioning as an ignition source beneath the driver’s seat.

The flames spread rapidly from the vehicle to the residence, eventually consuming an estate that was under contract for sale at nearly six million dollars. Firefighters battled the blaze for over seven hours, but the property was ultimately deemed a total loss. Beyond the estimated seven million dollars in economic damages, the family sustained significant physical injuries and suffered profound psychological trauma while escaping the fire.

Such incidents have unfortunately become a concerning aspect of the brand’s modern reputation. A few years ago, a diesel-powered Range Rover ignited within a crowded London airport parking structure, a fire that penetrated concrete and destroyed approximately 1,500 other vehicles. While that incident was attributed to a core electrical fault, this recent lawsuit specifically identifies the infotainment module as the primary source of the ignition.

Recommending these six-figure vehicles is difficult when their electrical systems pose a catastrophic fire risk. While the brand’s luxury and pedigree remain, persistent reliability issues and potential thermal hazards in the infotainment system are unacceptable. Until Land Rover drastically improves quality control, parking these SUVs in an attached garage remains a dangerous gamble.
