2025 Porsche 911 Launched With New T-Hybrid Technology For GTS Model
Porsche facelifts the 911, and as expected, the car also gets electric power (GTS model). But without a plug and with more power.
Since the launch of the current 992 generation, it has been clear that a hybrid version of the 911 was coming, but in what form? It will be a concept that we have never seen before on a road car; Porsche calls it T-Hybrid. Only the GTS version of the new 911 gets this drivetrain. The GTS was launched at the same time as the basic Carrera, which still has a 3.0 petrol engine but with slightly more power.
Larger engine for Porsche 911 GTS
Instead of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre 9A2B6 used on the 992.1, the new GTS gets the 9A3B6 engine. It displaces 3.6 litres, uses an electrically enhanced turbocharger, and is supplemented by a powerful electric motor/generator tucked into the housing of the eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. Porsche calls this the T-Hybrid, which stands for Turbo Hybrid, to distinguish it from the company’s PHEVs, dubbed E-Hybrids.
There’s also a 32.6-hp traction motor sandwiched between the flat-six and the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Both are driven by a very small 1.9-kWh battery that sits under the front hood where the 12-volt battery normally resides in other 911 models. The 12-volt battery, in turn, moves to a compartment behind the rear parcel shelf. This powertrain is designed to boost performance across the rev range while running the ideal air-fuel ratio of 14.7:1 at almost all times.
Electrical Stuff Adds 110 Pounds
Let’s address the elephant in the frown right up top. This T-Hybrid system is utterly unlike the plug-in E-Hybrid systems powering Porsche heavyweights like the Panamera and Cayenne. The 911 hybrid’s 1.9kWh lithium-ion battery features chemistry like that used in Formula 1 hybrids, is sized like the starter battery in a typical new luxury car, and it weighs about 37 pounds. It sits right above the front axle. The traction motor, power electronics, orange wires, and stuff to keep it all safe add up to about another 73 pounds. Lightweighting efforts like deleting the rear seats (now a no-cost option) serve to offset the weight of new non-hybrid-related standard equipment (like rear-axle steering). All in all, we’re promised the T-Hybrid system will add just 110 pounds.
Inside, there’s a fully digital curved 12.6-inch reconfigurable cluster that can be programmed to show an old-style tach rotated so redline results in a vertical needle, and deeper CarPlay integration allows some of this information to appear on the center cluster. The big center display can show all manner of performance data if anyone has the spare attention to study it while “on maneuvers.” And all 911 hybrid models get a new leather and “Race-Tex” suede interior.
Many other improvements will be further discussed in the video below.
