Is It Necessary To Apply The Handbrake Before Turning Off A Car With an Automatic Transmission?
If you’ve never had the experience of driving a car with an automatic transmission, prepare to be taken aback by some of the subtle nuances and unexpected rules that come into play.
Many drivers of cars with an automatic transmission are used to putting the transmission in “P” position and turning off the engine when they finish driving. However, this is not always enough—especially if the vehicle is on an uphill or downhill slope.
Namely, the “P” position mechanically blocks the transmission using a locking pin that holds the vehicle over the drive wheels. However, under certain loads, especially on a downhill, this blockage can loosen.
That’s why the recommendation is as follows: while keeping your foot on the brake, shift the gearbox to the “N” position, then activate the manual (or electronic parking) brake—with electronic ones, a characteristic tightening is often heard.
Then release the brake, then press it again so that the weight of the vehicle completely “rests” on the handbrake. Only then shift the transmission to “P” and turn off the vehicle.
In any case, regardless of whether the terrain is flat or not, apply the handbrake. It costs nothing and can prevent potential problems.
