An Electric Chevrolet That Weighs Close To 4 Tons Can Travel 1,705 Kilometers On A Single Charge

The Chevrolet Silverado EV has set a record by travelling farther than any other electric vehicle without recharging. This nearly 4,000-kilogram pickup has outperformed the lighter Lucid Air.
In July, a Lucid Air Grand Touring set a Guinness World Record by driving over 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) on a single charge. This record has now been surpassed by the Chevrolet Silverado EV Max Range Work Truck, the lightest version of the electric pickup, which boasts the longest range. Despite being classified as “light,” this nearly six-meter-long truck weighs 3,840 kilograms (8,400 pounds).
The Chevrolet Silverado EV Max Range Work Truck covered a whopping 1,050 miles (1,705 kilometers) without stopping at a charging station. Its maximum range is 490 miles (793 kilometers) on paper, so the pickup truck managed to travel twice as far. Of course, the 1,050-mile (1,705-kilometer) distance wasn’t covered under normal conditions.
A team of GM engineers attempted a record by driving in one-hour intervals around the Milford Proving Ground test track in Michigan. They did not alter the vehicle’s software and aimed for an average speed of 20 to 25 miles per hour, avoiding hard braking and heavy acceleration.
To enhance aerodynamics, the windshield wipers were on the lowest setting, the tires were fully inflated, the spare tire was removed, and wheel alignment was adjusted. The trunk was covered with a tonneau cover, and the climate control system was turned off. The attempt took place in the summer to optimize battery performance.
It’s certainly possible to get even more mileage out of the EV, one of Chevy’s engineers explains in an accompanying letter. “If we were driving downhill all the time, we’d get an insane amount of mileage. But that wasn’t the point here. We wanted this to happen on public roads.”
