5th-gen Toyota Prius Wins 2023 Japan Car of the Year (JCOTY) Award
5th-gen Toyota Prius, which arrived late last year, has emerged this year’s 2023 Japan Car of the Year.
Prius got 360 votes to beat out the BMW X1 (with 150 votes) and the Honda ZR-V (with 100 votes) to the coveted prize.
While the BMW X1 missed out on the coveted 2023 JCOTY, the luxury Compact SUV emerged the “Import Car of the Year” award.
Mitsubishi Delica Mini bagged the Design Car of the Year award while Nissan Serena won the Technology Car of the Year.
Award is given to newly released or redesigned cars released from Nov 1 of the previous year to Oct 31 of the current year in the Japanese market.
The latest and 5th-generation Toyota Prius, unveiled on 16 November 2022, has emerged this year’s “2023 Import Car of the Year” (JCOTY), beating out the BMW X1 (with 150 votes) and the Honda ZR-V (with 100 votes) with its 360 votes.
Also part of the “10 Best” cars selected by 60 jurors were the Toyota Alphard MPV, Nissan Serena, Subaru Crosstrek, Mitsubishi Delica Mini, Abarth 500e, Maserati Grecale and Volkswagen ID.4.

While the BMW X1 missed out on the coveted 2023 JCOTY, the luxury Compact SUV emerged the Import Car of the Year award, while the Mitsubishi Delica Mini bagged the Design Car of the Year accolade.
The Nissan Serena won the Technology Car of the Year award for its new e-Power system and Pro Pilot 2.0 driver assist system, a year after the all-electric Sakura minivehicle won the 2022-2023 Japan Car of the Year award.
The annual award presented since 1980 is given to newly released or redesigned Japanese and non-Japanese imported vehicles released from November 1 of the previous year to October 31 of the current year in the Japanese market.
