Classic 1950s Mercedes-Benz 180 ‘Ponton’ Spotted Cruising Majestically On The Nigerian Road
Classic 1950s Mercedes-Benz 180/190 ‘Ponton’ sedan spotted cruising majestically on the Nigerian road.
Copart sticker on the windshield and the absence of number plate suggests that the Mercedes car just made its way into the country.
Produced from 1953 to 1962, the W120 and W121 are technically similar sedans made by Daimler-Benz.
Both W120 (180) and W121 (190) are nicknamed the “Ponton” due to their unibody-type, pontoon-shaped exterior styling.

A pre-S-Class 1950s Mercedes-Benz 180/190 (W120/W121) ‘Ponton’ sedan was recently spotted cruising majestically on the Nigeria road by an eagle-eye car enthusiast who can’t stop admiring the classic car.
This rare sighting was captured by a passenger in another vehicle, who was heard jokingly begging the driver of the Mercedes-Benz W120/W121 ‘Ponton’ to sell the classic car to them.

As seen in the video posted to Auto Contentment Instagram page, the vehicle’s 1.8 liter M136 engine (also 1.8-liter OM636 for diesel option), which produces just 52 horsepower, is still very much alive.
While Autojosh don’t know the history of this particular car, a Copart sticker on a vehicle’s windshield and the absence of vehicle number plate suggests that the Mercedes-Benz car just made its way into the country.

Produced from the mid-1950s to the early 1960s, the W120 and W121 are technically similar sedans made by Daimler-Benz and nicknamed the “Ponton” in reference to the unibody-type, pontoon-shaped exterior styling.
First introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 1953, the W120 was sold as the Mercedes-Benz 180 through 1962 while the W121 was introduced as the Mercedes-Benz 190 in 1956. 442,963 examples of the W120/W121 were built between 1953–1962.
