Although he has retained his position as CEO, his story reminds me of China’s Last Emperor, who was pardoned after the revolution (despite collaborating with the Japanese) and became a simple gardener. pic.twitter.com/MCDsZMPpZJ

As of May 2025, Ma’s net worth was estimated at US$27.2 billion. As expected, the video of the Chinese businessman riding alone without security guards sparked wide interest online, with one user asking :
“A simple gardener with billions in the bank — is China so safe that billionaires like him don’t need bodyguards?”
A user notes that : “Do that in america you have a 50/50 chance of making it home alive, riding after dark, no helmet, no bike lane, drunk drivers, homeless people coming out of the shadows to steal your bike, is this one of those wait for it videos?”

Another remarked : “Chinese do not have a culture of billionaire worshipping, like we do in Murikaaaaaaa, because the Chinese are very smart, and know that governments secretly create billionaires…”
Unlike Ma, Nigerian billionaire Arthur Eze also ditched his Rolls-Royces back in 2021 for a heavily guarded bicycle ride. During the ride, about half a dozen heavily armed security guards were seen running behind the bicycling oil tycoon to ward away would be attacker.
