Pa Adesanya Escaped Assassination Unhurt When His Unarmoured Car Was Shot More Than 40 Times
Pa Adesanya escaped assassination attempt on his life in 1997 when more than 40 bullets shot were fired at his unarmoured car, a Mercedes.
The then-74 year old, who was the son of a famous and powerful traditional healer, told his driver to continue driving; assuring him that no single bullet will hit him or the driver.
This incident gave Pa Adesanya the nickname “Apamaku”, the last man standing.
It’s been over 12 years since the demise of Nigerian politician, lawyer, welfarist, and liberal progressive, Chief Abraham Aderibigbe Adesanya.
The elder statesman and pro-democracy activist died on April 27, 2008 at the age of 85.
Pa Adesanya made a gigantic contribution to the efforts that won the battle for democracy.
He was one of few political activists that was alive to see the return of democratic rule after a 16-year period of military domination.
Adesanya became one of several ‘marked men’ because of his objections to the annulment of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election.
The former chieftain of Afenifere once said it was only through the grace of God that he survived the torrent of bullets that were rained on his car by assassins working for the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, in 1997.
According to reports, Pa Abraham Adesanya; who was the son of a famous and powerful traditional healer; survived the over 40 bullets fired at his MMercedes-Benz at close range from various angles.
The Ijebu man reportedly told his driver to continue driving; — assuring him that no single bullet will hit him or the driver.
After the assassins had fled, the then-74 year-old, who was unhurt during the assault, continued his journey to the office.
This incident gave Pa Adesanya the nickname “Apamaku”, the last man standing.
The assassination attempt on Pa Adesanya’s life was carried out by deadly Strike Force of General Sani Abacha, including Sgt. Barnabas Jabila (also known as Sgt Rogers).
But not everyone was so luck like the former NADECO leader, Pa Adesanya.
The same assassin squad were able to kill other political activities; including Pa Alfred Rewane, Suliat Adedeji, Admiral Elegbede and Kudirat Abiola.
Alex Ibru, a Nigerian businessman and founder and publisher of The Guardian newspaper, was also shot and consequently half-paralysed.
