Court Orders Emirates To Pay Nigerian Passenger $1.63m After The Airline Lost His Bag Containing Said Amount

Nigerian court orders Emirates Airlines to pay passenger $1.63m for losing his hand bag containing the said amount.

The said amount was unlawfully taken away from him by Emirates staffs during business trip from Lagos to China in 2007.

They later converted the money to their use. For the untold hardship, Emirates Airline was also fined N50 million ($131,000).

Losing a luggage containing over one million dollars can be very painful, especially when the said amount was taken illegally and unlawfully.

Now, a Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered Emirates Airline to pay a staggering $1. 63 million to businessman Mr Orji Ikem for losing his luggage.

According to reports, the said amount, which was contained in his hand luggage, was unlawfully taken away from him by some staff of Emirate Airline during a business trip from Lagos to China in 2007.

The staff, who approached him at Lagos Airport and promised to hand over the cash filled bag back to him when they arrive in China, later converted the money to their use.

For the untold hardship, Justice Sule Hassan, who made the orders on Monday, also fined Emirates the sum of N50million.

The businessman said police investigation revealed that the two handheld luggage taken from him by Emirates Airline at its boarding gate at MMIA Ikeja, was never loaded in any plane.

He added that the two luggage never left Lagos and never travelled at any other time but was rather withheld or detained by the airline till date.

Emirates has reportedly said this is not a final verdict and that it will contest Monday’s ruling.

“Emirates has already filed an appeal in this matter and we will be vigorously defending our position.”
