Mercedes-Benz Celebrates 100 Years Of Its Three-pointed Star Logo - autojosh

German Autogiant Mercedes-Benz celebrates 100 years of its iconic three-pointed star logo.

Founding company Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft applied for its first patent for the tri-star on November 5, 1921.

The iconic three-pointed star logo simply represents the brand’s domination of the land, the sea, and the air.

In its formative years, the Mercedes three-pointed star was used without a surrounding ring to adorn the radiators.

The Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star with a ring around it is one of the most famous ornaments on cars. Over the years, Mercedes has adorned its vehicles, including the C-Class, E-Class and S-Class, with the feature, which simply represents the brand’s domination of the land, the sea, and the air.

Now, the German company is celebrating 100 years of its birth. Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) company had applied for its first patent for the tri-star on November 5, 1921, an iconic logo that it is still recognized with today.

The defining idea came from Paul and Adolf Daimler, the sons of the company founder, Gottlieb Daimler, who had died several years earlier in 1900. They adapted a three-pointed star for use as the brand logo.

Their father, Gottlieb had used a symbol like this one to mark the family’s house on a postcard depicting a view of the town of Deutz during his time as technical director of Gasmotorenfabrik Deutz. On 24 June, DMG applied for legal protection for a graphically designed version of the symbol.

In its formative years, the Mercedes three-pointed star was used without a surrounding ring to adorn the radiators. But it was also sometimes seen on the sides of the bonnets of Mercedes passenger cars, often still combined with the “Mercedes” lettering. One typical image comprises two Mercedes stars opposite one another on both sides of the characteristic V-shaped radiator.

Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in 1890. Because of the post World War One German economic crisis, DMG merged in 1926 with Benz & Cie., to become Daimler-Benz, adopting Mercedes-Benz as its automobile trademark.
