Mind-blowing McMurtry Spéirling electric fan car breaks Goodwood Hill Climb Record, dethrones VW I.D. R.

Spéirling, a 200mph battery-powered single-seater car ran the 1.16-mile course in 39.08 seconds.

A 543-hp BMW M4 CSL, driven by professional hill climb racer took 51.12 seconds to finish the same route on Sunday.

McMurtry Automotive’s MD said that the company will build a roadgoing version of its Spéirling track car.

McMurtry Spéirling, a Batmobile lookalike battery-powered electric car, on Sunday set a new record for the quickest run up at the famed hill-climb at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

With former IndyCar and Formula 1 driver Max Chilton, Spéirling blitzed the 1.16-mile course in 39.08 seconds to beat the previous record time held by electric Volkswagen I.D. R by 0.8 seconds.

Chilton had earlier rocketed to 39.14 seconds on Saturday before managing to shave another six hundredths of a second off his previous best to finish with an average speed of 149.13mph.

To put the record 39.08 time into perspective, a 543-horsepower BMW M4 CSL, driven by professional hill climb racer, Jörg Weidinger, took 51.12 seconds to finish the same route on Sunday.

McMurtry Spéirling is 3.5 meters (137.8 inches) long, 1.7 m (66.9 in) wide, and 1.1 m (43.3 in) tall. The 1000-hp battery-powered single-seater is capable of sprinting from zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) in under 1.5 seconds and reaching a limited top speed of 150 mph (241 km/h).

Speaking exclusively to Autocar at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, McMurtry Automotive’s managing director Thomas Yates said the company will build a roadgoing version of its Spéirling track car.

He said:

“We want to provide something that you can drive through the centre of London, and then take onto a track.

“It will never be the most comfortable over speed bumps, but that’s not really the point.

“The point is you have this unbelievable, loud, exciting, electric really compact car that you know will be the fastest [car] at any track day you attend.”
