The police department said they were “shocked to see over two dozen passengers inside” the vehicle.

The incident happened in Fatehpur District, a town in India’s most populated state of Uttar Pradesh.

An auto-rickshaw can generally carry three people, but in India, some are modified to seat up to six.

Tricycles are hugely popular with the Indian middle class as they are the cheapest means of transportation.

An auto-rickshaw, popularly known here in Nigeria as Keke Marwa, crammed with record-breaking 27 passengers has been seized by police in Indian for violating the speed limit and for being overloaded.

According to media reports, the tricycle was chased down and forced to stop by the police following the driver’s refusal to stop after being flag down for going too fast.

A video shared showed the occupants of the tricycle, including children, disembarking from the four-passenger vehicle. A policeman can be seen counting each passenger as they exited the vehicle.

The incident reportedly happened in Fatehpur District, a town in India’s most populated state of Uttar Pradesh.

Rajesh Kumar, superintendent of Fatehpur police, told the Times of India newspaper that the police were “shocked to see over two dozen passengers inside” the vehicle.
