Renault And Mitsubishi Now Equal In Alliance
Renault and Nissan have been linked for years in the Renault-Nissan Alliance, but the relationship between the two has not always gone smoothly. To avoid conflicts in the future, the two car manufacturers have come to a compromise in which the brands both have exactly the same influence.
Renault, Nissan, and since 2016 also Mitsubishi are connected in what has been called the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance since 2016. Unlike the Volkswagen Group or Stellantis, the three brands do not form one company, but they do work together, and they also have a share in and therefore partial control over each other. That’s where the problem lies because Renault’s share in Nissan was always larger than Nissan’s share in Renault. When it came down to it, the French had the last word, and they were certainly not always happy with that in Japan.
After undoubtedly long conversations, during which in our minds the sushi was washed down with a nice French wine and the baguettes were alternated with Fugu, an agreement was reached that every brand can agree with. Renault is putting a 28.4 percent stake in Nissan in a separate, neutral trust fund, which will also vote neutral in a vote. Renault’s ‘voting’ share in Nissan therefore drops to 15 percent, exactly the same as Nissan’s share in Renault. Both brands now stand next to or opposite each other as equal partners within the alliance. This plan was previously announced but has now actually been implemented.
If the shares in the trust fund make money, that profit is still ‘normal’ for Renault. That brand may also sell the ‘stored’ shares but is not obliged to do so.
