Lagos Blue Line gets Greener as Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) tests independent power plant.

The Blue Line system’s independent power system is a Diesel Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply devices (DRUPS) system.

It has six sub stations along the corridor and guarantees constant supply of electricity to the train system including the stations.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced the completion and start of test-run of an Independent Power Plant aimed at improving the efficiency and reliability of the Lagos State Blue Line Rail.

According to a statement by the Agency, the independent power plant is a standby system for the main power source from the national grid through the Eko Electricity Distribution Company from its Ijora and Akongba sub-stations.

The Blue Line system’s independent power system is a Diesel Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply devices (DRUPS) system. It has six sub stations installed along the corridor and guarantees constant supply of electricity to the train system including the stations.

The Diesel Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply devices is activated when grid supply fails or goes beyond tolerance limits. It uses energy stored in the flywheel to drive the electrical generator, which continues to supply power without interruption till the diesel
engine starts.

A LAMATA team led by the Director of Rail Transport, Engr. Olasunkanmi Okusaga during a visit to Blue Line’s Independent Power Plant on Wednesday 13th March 2024 were taken through the installation and the working of the system.

Speaking during the visit, Engr. Okusaga described the Blue Line’s power system as huge stating that the government was happy because the system is scalable and would be able to cater to the power needs of the entire line up to Okokomaiko.
