Thousands Of Volkswagen Workers Demonstrate Outside The Company’s Headquarters
On Thursday, thousands of Volkswagen employees protested against the automaker’s severe cost-cutting measures, coinciding with the start of significant negotiations between management and unions.
About 6,000 workers from all over Germany took part in the protest rally in front of Volkswagen’s headquarters in Wolfsburg, waving banners with messages such as “Fight for our future” and “Solidarity wins.”
Thursday’s talks are the third round since Volkswagen announced in September that it was considering factory closures in Germany. The group’s works council fears that could cost tens of thousands of jobs.
The IG Metall union wants management to abandon its plans. The union has proposed wage cuts to prevent mass layoffs. However, it has also threatened that if management does not rule out factory closures, there will be strikes on a scale not seen in Germany for decades, possibly as early as next month.
