For What Reason Did Lamborghini Stop Producing The V10 Engine?
When the last Audi R8 rolled off the production line in March, it archived the mighty V10. The legendary 5.2-litre engine is gone as Lamborghini uses a different powertrain in the successor to the Huracan. It is a V8 engine with a hybrid system.
Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini’s chief technical officer, explained in an interview with Top Gear magazine why the V10 is dead. The power of that engine would have to be reduced by as much as 20% to keep up with increasingly strict emission regulations. The engine developed a maximum of 631 hp, so the new engine would develop 500 hp, which is too little from the position of a super sports car today. That’s how much he developed the V10 engine in Gallardo over two decades ago.
There were ideas that the successor of the Huracan, the Temerariro, would also get a V6 engine, but that was removed because the transition from a V10 engine to four fewer cylinders would still be too much. So, the V8 engine was chosen. The new 4.0-litre petrol engine produces 789 hp. Mohr says engineers can squeeze out another 80 hp. Lamborghini can also tune the electric motors, resulting in a combined output that would reach the 1000 hp mark.
