Hyundai’s N Division Offers More Than Just Electric Vehicles
Hyundai’s N brand plans to introduce new models with internal combustion engines alongside its electric Ioniq 5 N and announced Ioniq 6 N.
The Korean firm’s sports division launched in 2017 with the i30 N, followed by the i20 N in 2021. In 2023, they introduced the Ioniq 5 N as their first electric car, but soon after, Autocar reported the withdrawal of the two gasoline hatchbacks from sale.
Following the unveiling of the Ioniq 6 N at next month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, the N brand will have a two-car, all-electric range. However, N division boss Joon Park hints that more models will follow—and they won’t necessarily be electric.
Speaking at the Autocar awards ceremony in London, Park said the N brand will keep pace with its parent company, Hyundai, in maintaining a diverse range of powertrains in the coming years.
“The problem we have is that there is a perception from the media and our fans that the Hyundai N is only focused on the electric vehicle world, which is not true,” he said. “While we will be presenting the Ioniq 6 N at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, we’re not just limited to electric vehicles.”
He wouldn’t confirm any specifics about these new models, but Hyundai has already confirmed that it will offer a significantly expanded lineup of hybrid models and will also launch its first range-extended electric car (REx) in the US next year.
Park noted that no specific technology has been ruled out for the N, saying, “Of course, we’re continuing with electric vehicles, as well as any other proposals we might make.” Because for the N, imagination and courage are the words we have to remember.”
The brand has also experimented with hydrogen fuel cells before, with the Vision N 74 concept from 2022, which had 680 hp and a total range of about 600 km.
