Per Capita, These Nations Have The Most Cars
The number of cars per 1,000 inhabitants is one of the more interesting indicators of development, living standards, and dependence on personal transport. While some countries lead the way with incredibly high numbers, others still only record hundreds of vehicles per entire community.
The absolute record holder is San Marino, a microstate in the heart of Italy, with an impressive 1,606 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants. In other words, every citizen has 1.6 cars. Followed by Andorra (1214), Liechtenstein (1068), New Zealand (934), the United States of America (816), and Italy (756). It is interesting that, among the leaders, there are not only rich countries but also those in which the car is the basis of everyday life due to the lack of alternative transportation options.
Europe as a whole shows a very high level of motorization. Germany has 632 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants, Austria 569, and Slovenia 581.
At the very bottom of the ladder are poorer and war-affected countries. Nepal has only 5 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants, Bangladesh has 27, and Ethiopia has 9. On the African continent, many countries, such as Niger or the Democratic Republic of Congo, record figures below 30. The reason lies in the low standard of living and poor infrastructure.
