Stellantis Pulls The Plug On The Electric Ram Due To Low Demand
Stellantis has decided to cancel the electric Ram 1500 EV before its launch due to a lack of demand for large electric pickups.
In March 2023, Ram unveiled the 1500 REV at the New York Auto Show, intending it to compete with the electric Chevrolet Silverado EV and Ford F-150 Lightning. However, with Ford already cutting F-150 Lightning production due to low demand, the situation worsened for the Ram 1500 REV, which was halted even before its market launch.
The Ram 1500 REV was initially set to launch in the US in 2024, but its release has been postponed to 2026, and it may not move forward at all. Stellantis stated, “With demand for full-size electric trucks declining in North America, we are discontinuing development of the Ram 1500 REV.” However, the model name will be retained.
The Ram 1500 Ramcharger will keep its name and is a variant of the gasoline-powered 1500, featuring two electric motors and a 92 kWh battery, along with a 3.6-liter V6 engine, which only recharges the battery and does not drive the wheels directly.
As part of this, Ram is changing the name of its REEV-powered pickup truck to the Ram 1500 REV (formerly known as the Ramcharger). According to the brand, this pickup truck will set a new benchmark in the half-ton segment, with exceptional range, towing capacity, and payload.
A notable step Stellantis and Ram recently took involved the Hemi V8. The eight-cylinder engine had previously disappeared from the 1500’s lineup but returned to the popular pickup mid-year. “We blew it,” Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis admitted in June.
