Watch: Police Stops Stolen Car Safely Using Grappler, Breaks Its Rear Axle After Suspect Tried To Break Free
Watch: Police stops stolen vehicle safely using grappler, breaks its rear axle after suspect tried to break free.
Grappler is used for bringing a suspect’s vehicle to a stop by deploying a high-strength net around its rear tyre and axle.
Three people, a male driver and two female passengers, were arrested and taken into custody.

Video shared by Livonia Police Department in Michigan shows officers deploying a grappler device to bring to an end their pursuit of a suspected stolen car travelling through the city.
The grappler is an innovative safety tool that quickly brings a suspect’s vehicle to a stop by deploying a high-strength net around its rear tyre and axle, stopping it within seconds.

In this case, after being stopped, the driver repeatedly tried to break free from the grappler by reversing and then accelerating forward, causing the stolen car’s rear axle to come off.

“…the Michigan State Police requested assistance from the Livonia Police Department while following a stolen vehicle traveling through our city,” the department said in a statement.
“Livonia Officers quickly responded to the area of westbound I-96 and Farmington Road and were able to bring the vehicle to a safe and controlled stop using the Grappler device.

“However, the Grappler held firm and because of the driver’s own actions, the vehicle’s rear axle was ripped off, permanently disabling the car. This is not typical with Grappler deployments and was solely the result of the driver’s reckless attempts to escape.”
Thankfully, no injuries were reported. But a 27-year-old male driver from Brighton and two female passengers aged 31 and 32 were arrested and taken into custody.
