2018 BMW 4 Series:

The 4-Series is a relative newcomer to the BMW family. It’s only been around since 2013, replacing the 3-Series coupe as its own model in the lineup. Since then, it’s sprouted a hardtop convertible variant and even a four-door Gran Coupe version, reaching niches and growing sales for BMW. The automaker says it’s updated the 4-Series for a 2018 mid-cycle refresh, but from 10 paces back, you’d have a hard time pointing out the changes. So keep an eye out on the new 2018 4 Series.

In this article we will focus on the 4 Series and its variants, including the 4 Series convertible, 4 Series Gran Coupe five-door hatchback and hopped-up M4 coupe.

• For the rebooted 4 Series, which freshens up the Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe models, BMW has swapped out the current model’s circular headlights and replaced them with hexagonal LEDs. The German automaker also widened the front air intake to give the vehicles a broader appearance.
• On the back end, BMW has also reworked the taillights as well. The L-shaped design from the current model year remains in place, but these, too, have received the full-LED treatment.
• Below the surface, BMW has equipped all three 4 Series vehicles with new, stiffer suspensions that promise more dynamic handling. The Coupe and the Gran Coupe—which is actually a four-door sedan—both receive advanced damping software and upgraded steering that offers less roll and greater stability.

The interior tweaks are just as difficult to notice.

• There’s a new sport steering wheel, a gloss black center console and double stitching on the instrument panel, alongside three new upholstery colors.
• Inside, BMW steps up the technology with an executive package, which allows the driver to choose between Comfort, Eco Pro and Sport modes for the instrument display. Comfort shows a classic instrument cluster with a speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, engine oil temperature and fuel gauge.
• Eco Pro focuses on range and brake energy regeneration to promote more economical driving. Sport mode, as you might have guessed, is focused on performance metrics such as speed, revs and engine output.

Tech updates are a bit more obvious.

• The 4 Series picks up the latest iteration of the iDrive infotainment system, which is still manipulated using the physical controller knob on the center console. There’s an optional instrument display that uses a screen to provide different gauge appearances based on the car’s current mode.
• BMW offers three different gas engines and three different diesel engines in non-US versions of the 4 Series. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is optional, as before.
• Also, all 4 Series vehicles also offer wireless charging and a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot that can serve up to 10 devices at a time. Speaking of devices, BMW offers Apple Car Play for iPhone connectivity
• The cherry atop the lineup remains the M4. BMW made a few tweaks to this specific variant, as well, including standard adaptive LED headlights and LED taillights. It receives the updated version of iDrive, as well as the aforementioned cabin tweaks.
