Customs impounds fuel tanker loaded with 250 bags of rice.

The duty of the the Nigerian Customs Service is to collect customs revenue and to checkmate smuggling of goods. On Friday, Customs impounded 250 bags of foreign rice concealed in a fuel tanker truck; this happened along Daura-Kano road.

Reacting to the development, Nasir Ahmed, Comptroller of the command, said

“What we saw today is a little bit new, something that is challenging to our thinking. If somebody can load rice in a compartment that is supposed to be containing diesel, petrol or kerosene, then we should assume that they can conceal anything in the tank.

“It can contain Tramadol, it can contain arms and ammunition or any other prohibited goods, and they loaded it in such a way that it will be very difficult to detect. But through intelligence and diligence of our men, they were able to perceive it.”

Added to that, he said keeping rice or any other consumable in such condition has some serious health implications in addition to the security threats it pose to the nation.

Smugglers are desperately looking for ways to bring in their contraband goods into the country. They however do not care about the health implications it pose to the human health. We all should be careful of where you buy your consumables.

Customs also assist in the enforcement of a wide range of import and export prohibitions and restrictions on behalf of a number of government agencies including the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON).
